In Nuevitas on Cuba's north coast, Orlando Corales is pastor of the Emaús Baptist Church. After hurricanes damaged the church building, the government provided a new roof. Reconstruction continues while the church's 30 members meet around stacks of wood and bags of cement. The Emaús church is in the historical heart of the city, which was founded in 1775, and an architect was commissioned to redesign the church's damaged interior so that it will be consistent with those of the other historical buildings nearby.
A beautiful and inviting city, Nuevitas, with a population of approximately 50,000, is next to the ocean and always enjoys a steady breeze. The city's commercial and industrial activities make it an important economic center.
