Las Tunas Province is an agricultural center that has focused on sugarcane production and cattle raising. The province's coastal lagoons are a draw for tourists who enjoy fishing for bonefish and tarpon.
The provincial capital, also known as Las Tunas, was burned when the Spanish tried to retake the city in 1895 during Cuba's War of Independence. The city has been rebuilt, though without the original architecture, and is now home to approximately 80,000 people.
The city of Las Tunas is 430 miles from Havana.
